“Is that everything?” I asked my mother as we stood outside the house she had shared with Snake. Movers were going in and out of the house removing boxes.

“I think so.”

My mother had decided that she no longer wanted to live in the house that Snake was murdered in. Every time I looked into her eyes I saw a deep sadness, and I could tell that she regretted having Snake killed. Something inside her loved that dog ass, abusive nigga. According to her, she had access to his bank account as well as his safety deposit box. Add that to the million-dollar life insurance policy, and selling three of his cars, and she was financially set. She went and got a small condo on the beach and decided to keep her Range Rover, and Snake’s Bentley. She sold his Rolls Royce, Bugatti, and Beamer. She was sitting on a nice piece of change, but she still wasn’t happy. I was learning more and more each day that money can’t buy happiness.

“I got a visit from the girl that you beat up out here that day. The light-skinned one with the blonde hair,” my mother said as she lit a cigarette.

“What did she want?” I asked.

“Money. She had the nerve to say that she’s still pregnant by Snake. They decided not to go through with the abortion, and he gave her $15,000, but that’s not gon’ last her until the baby comes because her rent alone is $1,300. She actually told me that like I cared. I was two seconds from beating her ass, but I let it go.”

“Well I’m going back to North Carolina with Crucial. I have some things that I need to handle.” I didn’t even touch on the subject of his mistress or their love child.

My mother shielded her eyes from the sun and looked me in the face. She wasn’t crazy by a long shot, and she knew more than likely that whatever I had to handle wasn’t light work. “You be careful, Shaka. I can’t deal with much more bad news.”

“I’m good, Ma.”
